I have been using NRG for years and about two years ago felt I got too much power in the new frame I started using (changed to Pure Drive from original Pro Staff 85's) but I liked the feel. I thought about going tighter but wondered what a very thin poly cross would do to tame the power and came up with a combo I really like. With the NRG 18 I only get about 90-120 minutes out of a string job so I use the 17g some, too, but I think it is a great hybrid. If the poly tames it too much, try a basic syngut cross.
